Activities that were done to earmark the celebrations included a float on the principal streets of Kumasi, where the school is located, several seminars and workshops, symposia, games, homecoming, and funfair, among others.
The climax of the 85th anniversary was the grand durbar which saw several dignitaries including the Asantehene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah, and the Deputy Minister of Education, Hon. Ntim Fordjour attending.
OKESS was established in 1937 as Ashanti Collegiate and was later named after the 14th King of Asante, Otumfuo Prempeh II, whose maiden name is Kwame Osei Kyeretwie. It is the first secondary school in the Ashanti Region. It started at Dekyemso and later moved to its present site at Tafo, all in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region.
