A Ghanaian Forestry expert with several years of practice, Dr. Alexander Asum, has completed his Ph.D. programme at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Ghana.
Dr. Alexander Asum is a distinguished Forest Scientist specializing in forest ecology, carbon sequestration, and climate change mitigation. He recently graduated from the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani with a Ph.D. in Social Forestry and Environmental Governance. His thesis topic focused on, “Contribution of Forest Plantation to Climate Change Risks Mitigation in Three Ecological Zones of Ghana”. He has over two decades of work experience in forest management and ecological research with the Forestry Commission of Ghana. Dr. Alexander Asum has made significant contributions to understanding the role of forest ecosystems, particularly forest plantations, in mitigating climate change.
Dr. Asum has a robust research portfolio focused on assessing biomass carbon stocks across diverse ecological zones. His Ph.D. research focused on evaluating the carbon sequestration potential of various tree species and understanding the intricate relationships between forest productivity and climate mitigation efforts. Through rigorous fieldwork and data-driven analysis, Dr. Asum has provided critical insights into how different ecological zones, such as moist semi-deciduous, dry semi-deciduous, and forest-savannah transition zones, contribute to carbon storage and climate resilience. He has successfully published two peer reviewed articles in international journals with the third one currently under consideration.
His recent work has underscored the importance of tailored afforestation practices and sustainable forest management in optimizing the contributions of plantation forests to global climate goals. Dr. Asum is a strong advocate for balancing environmental development with economic development. He has reiterated the need of integrating scientific research into policy frameworks and has collaborated extensively with policymakers, practitioners, and fellow researchers to promote context-specific climate change strategies.
Dr. Asum’s dedication to advancing environmental sustainability is reflected in his publications, presentations and active participation in discussions on climate change and forest management. His research serves as a foundational resource for shaping climate policies and afforestation initiatives, particularly in regions like Ghana, where ecological diversity plays a pivotal role in carbon sequestration efforts.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Asum is committed to fostering knowledge transfer and capacity building among local communities, aiming to empower stakeholders with the information and tools necessary to adapt to climate change challenges effectively. Through his work, Dr. Asum continues to make a lasting impact on the global discourse surrounding sustainable practices and climate action.
