Namibian Marine Engineering Students at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences in Finland Share Their Story

Namibian students studying Master's Degree in Marine Engineering Studies at the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) in Finland have shared stories of their study so far.

The students expressed that though there were few earlier cultural shocks, they have really adapted to the Finnish culture and are comfortable with their stay and studies. They explained some of the academic programmes and processes they have been going through to be maritime professionals. They stated that they have been doing their training aboard various Finnish vessels sailing over the EU, and, thus, gaining some sea time experience mainly around the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.

They used the opportunity to express their gratitude to their home government and the Finnish government for such platform.  for this amazing opportunity and look forward to finally graduating next year so we can plough back our knowledge and experiences to Namibia.”

The reason for Namibia sending their students to SAMK IN Finland was to meet one of the requirements of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) for its member countries; which is, getting a certain number of certified maritime professionals before a country would be white-listed.
